Bats

Our best advice is to pick a bat length that fits your child. Have your child stand with an arm straight out to the side with straight fingers. Place the knob of the bat in the center of their chest and hold it horizontal along the arm. The correct length should go out to the end of the fingers or a slight wrap of the fingers over the end.

All bats will have a drop weight....i.e., -11 (lighter) or -8 (heavier) listed on the barrel. If you take the length of the bat and subtract the drop weight it will give you the weight of the bat in ounces (30" bat with a -11 drop weight = 19 ounce bat). Once you have the correct length, find a weight your child can handle. You don't want a bat that's too heavy and they can't handle.

Bat Styles

For girls just starting out in the sport, that want their own bat, low-cost aluminum bats are the way to go.

As girls move up to different age levels and skill set, there are many more bat styles open by way of composite bats. The cost of the composite bats are considerably more then their counterparts.

When moving up to a composite bat, we strongly encourage players to swing different brands and styles, as manufacturers are known to have either balanced or end-loaded bats. Often you can test these out at the batting cage set up at Dick's Sporting Goods.
